CSWD doesn't pick up your trash, we help you make less of it!
WHO PICKS UP MY TRASH?
Residents and businesses of most towns in Chittenden County (except Westford) have three options for disposing of their trash:
- Contract with a private hauler for collection at your home.
- Use a CSWD Drop-Off Center (for loads under 1 cubic yard). Click here for fees.
- Use a privately-operated transfer station (for large loads over 1 cubic yard).
- It is NOT an option to burn trash. In fact, it's downright unhealthy (increases risk of many health problems, such as heart disease, asthma, emphysema, headaches, and cancer), risky for kids (they absorb up to six times more pollution than adults), and it's illegal. Violators are subject to fines of up to $500. For more information go to Don't Burn Vermont.
Recycling note: If you contract with a private hauler for residential trash collection, they must also offer recycling pickup. In Burlington and Westford, residential recycling is picked up by the town. For more recycling options and information, go to our Recycling page. Recycling is mandatory for all residents and businesses in CSWD; and some materials are banned from landfill disposal.
WHO SHOULD I CONTACT FOR HOLIDAY PICK-UP SCHEDULE? Call your hauler to find out their holiday schedule. Click here for a list of haulers and contact information.
WHO SHOULD I CONTACT WHEN BAD WEATHER DELAYS TRASH AND RECYCLING PICKUPS? Call your hauler for the new schedule. Click here for a list of haulers and contact information.
WHO SHOULD I CONTACT WHEN I NEED A LARGE AMOUNT OF TRASH TO BE PICKED UP? Have lots of junk in the basement or in the garage that you don't need anymore? Have a large appliance you want to take to a CSWD Drop-Off Center but don't have a big enough car? Click here to find a list of special haulers in the area who may be able to help.
WHO SHOULD I CONTACT WITH QUESTIONS OF ILLEGAL BURNING OR DUMPING OF TRASH ? It is illegal to burn household trash or to dump trash in undesignated places. To report illegal burning or dumping incidents, please contact CSWD. Our Enforcement Coordinator, Katie Frederick will be happy to assist you in resolving the issue. To ask questions or report violations please contact Katie via email or at 872-8100.
Additionally, CSWD provides annual grants to communities in Chittenden County to clean up local problem areas. The grants, part of CSWD's Community Clean Up Fund may be used to pay for activities directly related to the clean up of solid waste such as disposal fees, container rental, transportation, and labor.
