Chittenden Solid Waste District offers in-class presentations on a wide variety of solid waste topics. Presentations can be tailored to any age group, from kindergarten to college. There is no fee. To schedule a presentation, contact CSWD.

Below is a description of some of the more popular topics. Each presentation includes visual aids and student participation. Other topics may be requested.

  • Recycling - The presentation focuses on what is and is not accepted for recycling in CSWD and how to prepare each item. If appropriate, the economic aspect of recycling is introduced.
  • Packaging - Students discover the many factors that influence the type of packaging used for products. Buy Smart strategies are introduced to help students minimize the amount of waste generated from the packages they purchase.
  • Landfills - This presentation gives a basic overview of the evolution of landfills, including their structure, maintenance, hazards, and alternatives.
  • Composting - Students learn about the rot cycle and microbes by observing a real worm composting bin. If requested, a worm bin can be assembled during the presentation to be left in the classroom.
  • Hazardous Waste - The presentation focuses on the qualities that make a substance hazardous, the dangers associated with improper disposal, and disposal options in CSWD. Less toxic alternatives are also explored.
