Curricular Materials
Chittenden Solid Waste District has a variety of curricular materials available to help educators teach students about solid waste issues. To borrow any of the materials listed below, contact CSWD. All materials are available for up to two weeks at no charge.

Project Learning Tree, Exploring Environmental Issues: "Places We Live"

A place-based module designed to inspire and empower students to become responsible, productive, and participatory members of their community. Excellent for secondary environmental educators teaching community design, green spaces, and natural resource management. Developed by the American Forest Foundation, 2006.
Project Learning Tree, Exploring Environmental Issues: "Municipal Solid Waste"
A place-based module with background information, activities, and appendices for secondary environmental education. The units address the following topics: The waste stream, source reduction, recycling and economics, composting, waste-to-energy, landfills, where does your garbage go, and success stories and personal choices. Includes Spanish translation of student pages! Developed by the American Forest Foundation, 2002.
"Quest for Less"
Activities and resources for teaching k-6; a guide for teaching key lessons in reducing, reusing, and recycling. Includes teacher fact sheets and grade appropriate activities for students to explore how they can take personal responsibility toward the environment and make a positive impact in their home, school, and community. Developed by the EPA, 2000.
"Pathways to a Sustainable Future"
A comprehensive guide for schools exploring waste management. Explains pathways to awareness, assessment, and action to promote waste reduction. Also includes a toolkit explaining effective letter writing, publicity, public service announcements, and pushing for change. Developed by The Chewonki Foundation for the Maine Waste Management Agency, 1999.

Hands-on activities for discovering the wonders of the world. A great resource for k-6 educators interested in exploring soils and the ecology of the compost pile. A guide produced by Shelburne Farms, 1995.
"Source Reduction Now"
A how-to guide for implementing an upstream approach to waste management. Includes purchasing guidelines and measurements of source reduction specific to products, facilities, and communities. Produced by the Minnesota Office of Waste Management, 1993.

A middle-level science curriculum on source reduction. Produced by the National Science Teachers Association and Dow Chemical Company, 1996.
"AVR's Teacher's Resource Guide: For Solid Waste and Recycling Education"
Comprehensive, user-friendly curriculum with information and examples specific to Vermont. Activities for students in grades K - 12 plus information and resources for teachers. Produced by the Association of Vermont Recyclers, 1989.
"Hazardous Materials Management: A Manual for Schools"
Covers how to handle, store, and safely dispose of hazardous materials at school, from the art room to the chemistry lab. Also includes information on less hazardous alternatives. Produced by the Association of Vermont Recyclers, 1992.
"No Time To Waste"
Hands on activities, worksheets, and games for elementary school students. Written by Wendy Wilson and illustrated by Ben Carlson, 1992.
"Scraps To Soil: A How-To Guide For School Composting"
A complete guide for students and teachers to establish on-site composting at their school. Produced by the Association of Vermont Recyclers, 1995.

The curriculum focuses on increasing students' awareness of the environmental and health impacts of household hazardous waste and encouraging students to become acitve participants in their community's efforts to solve environmental problems.
