TOLD (Trash on Lawn Day)
Trash on Lawn Day (TOLD) , an event designed by the Association of Vermont Recyclers (AVR), is an excellent service-learning project and school-wide waste audit that assesses environmental needs within your school community. It focuses on waste management practices and highlights areas for improved recycling and composting programs at the school.

In collaboration with CSWD and AVR several Chittenden County high schools have participated in TOLD events in the past. At each TOLD, the school takes all the trash generated in one day at their campus and sorts it into categories to see how much is made up of items that could have been recycled, reused, or composted. These one-day trash sorts invite the school and surrounding community to see how easy it can be to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in the landfill. In fact, a TOLD conducted in 2006 at Champlian Valley Union High School (CVU) revealed that recyclable materials made up more than 14 percent of what had been thrown away as trash. This finding spurred CVU to look at ways to be more sustainable by improving their recycling infrastructure, starting a composting program, and growing some of their own produce.
