FREE Propane Tank Recycling
Have you tried to get your propane grill tank filled lately? If so, you may be aware that there is a new valve design that has rendered the old-style tanks obsolete. You can distinguish old from new by looking at the handles that are used to release the propane. The new tanks have a triangular-shaped handle, whereas the old tanks have a round handle.

As of April 1, 2002, old-style tanks are no longer being refilled. CSWD has a few options to dispose of your old 20-pound tank (whether it's empty or still containing gas) in an economical and environmentally responsible manner.

Option 1: Take your old tank to a store that offers an exchange program (such as Blue Rhino). They will accept your old tank and give you a full tank in exchange (with the new-style valve). The fee ranges from $19.98 (at Home Depot) to more than $30, but you will leave with a new tank.

Option 2: Take your old tank to one of the CSWD facilities listed below and they will recycle the metal. Businesses and residents may bring up to five 1 or 20 pound propane tanks per day to any of the CSWD facilities listed below. There is no fee, but you will leave with no tank. Businesses or residents that have more than five 20 pound propane tanks will be directed to the Williston DOC and charged (currently $1.00 per tank)
