Green Up Day
Green Up Day began in April 1970 and continues today as a unique Vermont tradition, bringing out thousands of volunteers throughout the state to remove litter and trash from our roadways, waterways and public places.
Green Up Day will occur on Saturday, May 3rd, 2014.
Green Up Day is coordinated state-wide by Green Up Vermont, a private non-profit organization. Funding for this organization comes from many sources including the State of Vermont, private businesses and individuals, and voluntary donations from towns and cities.
Each town and city appoints or recruits a Green Up DayCoordinator. The main role of the local coordinator is to distribute posters and bags (provided by Green Up Vermont), recruit volunteer teams, identify areas to clean up, arrange for transportation of litter and track basic statistics. Visit the Green Up Vermont website or call 802-229-4586 for contact information for your local Green Up Day coordinator.
The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) supports Green Up Day with an annual donation to Green Up Vermont in the name of our member towns and cities. In 2012 CSWD donated $4,050 on behalf of our member towns. We also donate the recycling costs of all the tires officially collected as part of Green Up Day.
Special thanks to All Cycle Waste, Inc. and Interstate Waste Services for their support and for covering the costs of disposal of Green Up litter!
