Learn more ways to promote sustainable practices at home, work, and school by attending or hosting a Community Sustainability Fair in your town. CSWD, in partnership with other local, environmental, and community organizations, hosts these informal gatherings where simple tools and strategies are discussed to help us learn how we can lessen our impact on the environment.
Click here for our calendar of events that lists upcoming sustainability fairs!
Examples of information available at the fair includes:
- Using non-toxic household cleaners: Widely available in grocery stores, just as effective as the harsh chemicals, and easy to make!
- Composting kitchen scraps: Find out just how many hundreds of pounds of compostable food scraps are thrown out each year, and how easy it is to keep it out of the landfill and from smelling up your trash!
- Recycle even more: Most households are recycling only a fraction of what they could be recycling. We'll fill you in on how to aim for the recycling bin and kick the garbage can habit.
- Building smarter. Construction waste makes up a huge portion of the waste stream. We can point to resources for reducing construction waste while keeping down costs.
- Transportation makes up much of the pollution in Vermont. We'll show you how buying locally and making slight shifts in your driving habits can have a big impact.
- Simplify, simplify, simplify. We'll show you ways to integrate simpler choices into your lifestyle.
Participating organizations at past fairs include: 10% Challenge , Vermont Earth Institute, Chittenden County Transportation Authority, Efficiency Vermont, Local Motion, Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District , Champlain Localvores, Vermont Peak Oil Network, and Town of Essex Energy Task Force .
We intend to host one of these events in every town or village in Chittenden County. If you are interested in hosting one of these events in your own town, please contact Marge Keough, CSWD Community Outreach Coordinator, at 872-8100 x 234 or mkeough@cswd.net.
We encourage you to come on out, join the discussion, and learn how to become a better steward of the environment!
