Merry Mulch Your Christmas Tree

This holiday season when its time to take down your Christmas tree, give it one more chance to light up the night with the Merry Mulch program! Your tree will either be burned to make electricity at the McNeil Generating Plant, or it will be turned into mulch to help next spring's flowers brighten up your garden. Below is a list of free drop-off locations for your Christmas tree that are available in Chittenden County.

Quantities Accepted: Up to 3 trees at each Drop-Off Center. The Williston DOC will accept any quantity of trees at no charge through the month of January. The McNeil Depot accepts any quantity year-round.

Note: Be sure to remove all the ornaments before you bring in your tree. Wreaths, garlands, and trees with tinsel are not suitable for mulching and will not be accepted.

Why aren't wreaths and garland accepted? Too often, wreaths and garland are made with real pine boughs attached to a plastic, wire, or wooden frame, and covered with plastic decorations. The best option is to separate the boughs from the plastic, and then recycle the boughs along with your tree. You'll have to toss (or reuse!!) the plastic decorations. Or, consider buying a plastic wreath that way you can use it during every holiday season.
